Heavy duty vehicles such as the wheeled loading shovel are key pieces of heavy duty equipment used within the land-based and construction industries. They are specially designed for a multitude of tasks, mainly involving moving and loading materials.
As the wheeled loading shovel is so versatile and has so many uses it is important that you are fully trained in the safe and efficient use of them.
Who Should Take This Course
Our course is for you if you are currently using a wheeled loading shovel, or if you are going to be using one, and you work in the land-based or construction industries. Our training course has experienced instructors who will provide you with the knowledge and skills required in order to operate the wheeled loading shovel safely and confidently.
Course Objectives:
The aim of our four day training course is to provide you with the knowledge and practical capabilities to operate the wheeled loading shovel safely within your working environment. Once you have completed and passed the course you will receive a certificate in training for Loading Shovel (wheeled).
Candidate Requirements:
Passport Photo.
Current Safe Pass is Advisable.
Personal Protective Equipment.
Participants must at least 18 years of age.
Training Methods:
Classroom based PowerPoint Presentation.
Practical assessment of operating under the supervision & direction of our highly experienced instructor.

Course Content:
- Working in the construction industry.
- Specific legislation/guidance on LOLER.
- Components of loading shovels.
- Stability of the machine.
- Familiarisation with instruments and controls.
- Stopping and starting the machine.
- Operating the machine: driving; use of front shovel; stockpile; site strip; ramp; load vehicle.
- Accident prevention.
- Pre-shift checks.
- Daily checks.
- Operating the multi-purpose bucket.
- Operating factors excavate.
- Driving on the highway and transportation.
- Site safety.
- Possible problems.
Learning Outcomes:
- Identify the basic construction and components, and the purpose and use of all controls and gauges.
- Identify and comply with manufacturers instructions in accordance with the operator handbook, other information sources and applicable legislation (PUWER, LOLER).
- Carry out all pre-use and running checks.
- Set the loading shovel for travel.
- Travel over differing types of terrain, including rough undulating ground, both in a loaded and unloaded state.
- Travel up and down substantial inclines in a loaded and unloaded state.
- Manoeuvre in confined areas using forward and reverse direction in a loaded and unloaded state.
- Carry out excavations from an embankment of different materials and form stockpiles and ramps.
- Ensure load integrity and security.
- Clean, spread and level differing types of material.
- Load various types of materials into receptacles, such as vehicles, hoppers and so on.
- Place the loading shovel in an out-of-service condition.
- Explain the loading and unloading procedures on and off a transporter.
